August, 2018:   We just received a recent success story from Nate Mahanes about one of our WWRC graduates, Philip Conner. Philip works at Intercon in Forest, Virginia, in a Manufacturing Tech position processing cable assemblies. Check out this very nice YouTube video about Intercon, produced by Amber Gulla.

June, 2018:  We are excited to learn that Spencer Clark just got a fulltime job at IDX up in Fredricksburg. Spencer graduated from WWRC and quickly went to work as a Mill Operator and we have learned that he is on the verge of a promotion to become a CNC operator. May, 2018:  Congratulations to Laura Williams and Rose Hilderbrand on their recent hires in the manufacturing industry!   Laura has been hired by Comsonics and Rose by Masco Cabinetry.  Both earned their MS and MT1 workforce credentials while enrolled in WWRC's Manufacturing Technology Training Program.

Congrats are also extended to to Dakota Gonzales, MTT graduate, who has been hired by NIBCO, Inc. in Stuart's Draft as a Machine Operator making $13/hour!

Our CVS Training initiative continues to grow, along-side national efforts across the country sponsored by CVS.  Meet Whitney Jones who completed her training at WWRC and recently went to work at CVS in Winchester.

October, 2017:  Congratulations to Jason Wildman, from Orange County, VA, on his hire as a Busser/Server at the Homestead Resort in Bath County!!



August, 2017 AmeriCare Award:  Wilson Workforce and Rehabilitation Center (WWRC) hosted an event recently for AmeriCare Plus to recognize the company’s "Why I Love Team Teal Spirit Award" Grand Prize Essay Winner. WWRC Health Occupations consumer, Odessa Johnson, won the award. AmeriCare’s Vice President for Development, Bill Hurt, Director of Operations, Kim Hurt, and Staff Director, Jaclyn Hostetter, presented a plaque as well as a "Publishers Clearinghouse Style" check for Two Thousand Dollars to Odessa for winning the contest. Odessa, currently enrolled in Health Occupations at WWRC is nearing completion of her Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) accreditation, but holds a Personal Care Aide Certification, which qualifies her to provide in-home care in the numerous hard-to-fill positions with AmeriCare. In addition to demonstrating extraordinary excellence in her work and winning the Essay Contest, Odessa has been given a permanent assignment with AmeriCare with her anticipated graduation. Odessa has severe hearing loss and utilizes Assistive Technology (blue tooth technology) to complete core responsibilities of her job. She plans to complete her CNA, work for AmeriCare, and pursue course work that will enable her to become a Registered Nurse. Americare.jpg



On Wednesday, August 2nd, Nate Mahanes, Business Development Manager for the Blue Ridge District, in conjunction with Penni Wetherell, placement counselor in the Fishersville DARS office, held a "mini" job fair for the consumers of the Wilson Workforce and Rehabilitation Center (WWRC). Mr. Mahanes arranged for the Homestead Resort (Bath County, VA) to come to WWRC from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  to meet with potentially eligible consumers interested in a variety of open positions, such as customer service associate, groundskeeper, culinary skills, computer support, housekeeping, and security officer. Representatives from the Homestead were able to answer general employment questions, offer application support, and explain some of the benefits of working at the Homestead, such as living on site for a reduced rate. This event was a perfect example of the business engagement model in action that both WWRC and DARS promote.

CVS Health Workforce Initiatives Manager Visit (February, 2017, excerpt WWRC Director's Report)

CVS Workforce Initiatives Manager, Duane Rohr, recently visited WWRC and met with students who are moving through the program to discuss the impact of the mock store and internships at CVS. Students relay that the store experience is providing a real base of skills that prepares them for CVS jobs. Duane also toured the Barterbrook CVS in Staunton with LaPearl Smith, BDM; James Hall, WWRC; and Rick Sizemore. Carter Garrett, WWRC consumer, says he loves working at the store, and the manager, Donna Braden, said that his skill level on day one was only shadowed by his willingness to work through lunch to get a truck unloaded. Donna went on to say, "we'd love to hire him."

CVS Manager of Workforce Initiatives

In August, 2016, Duane Rohr and John White visited WWRC to follow up on our work with CVS Health. Duane relayed that WWRC is considered a model for how a mock store should be operated and CVS is referencing it when talking with others about similar ventures. Duane brought John to WWRC so he could see not only CVS, but all of the other programs and services at the Center. Throughout the day, both John and Duane emphasized how impressed they were with consumers they met and the staff who welcomed them in every program they visited. CVS Health has hired numerous consumers this year and a continuous pool of graduates are preparing to leave WWRC as CVS job seekers.


In July, 2016 CVS Health convened a meeting in Kansas for 21 disability services agencies to overview its inclusive hiring practices and to discuss innovations they have employed to hire individuals with disabilities.  Rick Sizemore, WWRC Director, was invited by CVS to explain the mock store training facility that has been successfully implemented at WWRC.  Rick reviewed the process of modifying the CVS new employee training guidelines and how it was overlaid with the WWRC Materials Handling curriculum.  Rick also reviewed the employment outcomes, the overall Agency program with CVS, and how internships at local CVS stores have been effective in helping consumers attain employment.  As CVS continues its outreach nationally, it is referencing WWRC as a model for effective partnerships in workforce development.

July, 2017

Thanks to Nate Mahanes, we had a wonderful tour with Angela Carrodeguas of Aramark, who is the Office Services Supervisor in Human Resources at the University of Virginia. They are hoping to hire around 60 workers for Food Service jobs and they were thrilled to tour our program here. Nate and Angela will be working together to connect exiting graduates from WWRC to these jobs.



WWRC Awarded VMA Partner of the Year (November, 2016):  WWRC is the recipient of the 2016 Virginia Manufacturer's Association (VMA) Partner of the Year Award for its outstanding leadership in changing perceptions about careers in manufacturing and in increasing access to industry certifications for individuals with disabilities in the Commonwealth of Virginia. "WWRC is providing its consumers with the opportunity to gain skills and credentials to seek employment in competitive, high-demand, high-quality manufacturing occupations," said Dr. Victor Gray, MSI Executive Director.  The partnership between WWRC and VMA has been very positive in helping the Center build a statewide network of interested employers.

The Governor's visit was so powerful on many levels endorsing WWRC's partnership with CVS, but the event is the culmination of extraordinary efforts over the past couple of years. The support that enabled us to shine on Monday would not be possible without a commitment from our partners in DRS, business development and placement staff.

Fisher Auto Parts' Donation (May, 2017): The WWRC Foundation is humbled by the generosity of Fisher Auto Parts who donated over $11,900 in materials to the Auto Mechanics Department at the Wilson Workforce and Rehabilitation Center. We appreciate the compassion of this outstanding company and champion in business in regard to the advancement of our programs.

Minute for our Mission:   Several of WWRC's ETO Groundskeeping students had the opportunity to participate in a three-hour class provided by Matt Booher of the Augusta County Extension Office. After successful testing, students achieved a Private Pesticide Applicator Certification issued by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Pictured, are two of the ETO Groundskeeping students, Jesse Gilliam and Jeral Ellis, holding their certifications.
