Commonwealth of Virginia HR policies and procedures offer a structure and format for delivery of an effective employee performance management system.  A formal evaluation of all core job functions, using the EWP as the framework, is required at least annually.   Classroom/lab observations and performance reviews are required annually by Virginia Department of Education policies and are critical to quality professional development and process improvements. The Vocational Training Administration and/or the Career and Workforce Development Division Director may observe direct reports and their classroom/lab areas at any time, as needed, per DARS HR and VDOE policy.

Virginia Standards for the Professional Practice of Teachers offers a resource guide published by the Virginia Department of Education (2008, revised 2020), jointly developed by the Virginia Board of Education and the State Council of Higher Education in Virginia, to provide a conceptual model of sound teaching standards, principles and practices for continuous professional development and improvement.   These standards, principles and practices focus on seven (7) categories:

  • Professional Knowledge
  • Instructional Planning
  • Instructional Delivery
  • Assessment of and for Learning
  • Learning Environments
  • Professionalism
  • Student Academic Progress

Further, there are Virginia Standards for the Professional Practice of Teachers in specific disciplines and specialized areas, such as Special Education and Career and Technical Education which have relevance to WWRC.    Employees should familiarize themselves with these standards, with guidance from the Vocational Training Administration and/or the Career and Workforce Development Division Director, as indicated.
