​​ The 15 appointed members of the Commission serve in an advisory capacity to the Governor and the Secretary of Health and Human Resources (HHR), and assist people with Alzheimer's disease or related disorders, as well as their caregivers. Commission meetings are held quarterly and members also serve on workgroups. In 2011 the Commission released Virginia's first Dementia State Plan, which was updated in 2015 and 2019, and will be revised every four years to remain receptive to the needs of persons with dementia and their caregivers. The Commission and DARS offer webpages that are accessible to Virginia citizens who wish to learn more about the Commonwealth's commitment to those affected by Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia on https://vda.virginia.gov/dementia.htm.  In 2022, the Commission launched Dementia Capable Virginia (https://vda.virginia.gov/dementiacapableva.htmwhich contains information and resources that can assist both family members and community service providers.
